Why Setting the Right Resolutions Matters
Regarding New Year’s resolution ideas, it’s easy to dream big, but the key to success lies in setting actionable goals. This is where the SMART framework—specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound—becomes your ally.
For example, instead of saying, “I want to exercise more,” you could aim for, “I’ll work out for 30 minutes, 3 times a week, starting January 1st.” The latter is clear, trackable, and realistic, making it more likely to succeed.
Your resolutions should reflect your priorities and values, ensuring they hold meaning throughout the year.
Are you Supposed to Say Your New Year’s Resolution?
Some might think telling people about your New Year’s resolutions is bad luck. Like blowing out your birthday candles, you’re not supposed to say anything, or it won’t come true!
However, telling others about your resolutions is sometimes a good thing. It truly depends on your motivation and seriousness about keeping your goals.
If you are not very excited about your resolutions, there is a higher chance that you will not try very hard to make them work.
That’s okay; most people fail to keep their goals.
But letting others in on your ideas can help you be determined not to disappoint them or yourself. It keeps you accountable.
I know that if I tell someone I want to do something, I will try my hardest to keep it. I don’t want to look like a quitter or be considered one.
So, the real question is, do you tell others about your resolutions?
1) How determined are you to keep it?
If you truly want this, tell one or two of your closest and honest friends. But then that leads me to my next point.
2) How good (supportive) are your friends or family?
Sadly, some people don’t want others doing well around them unless they are doing good themselves.
I hate thinking there’s secretly wishing you fail, but that’s the reality.
If you have told your friends or family in the past something that you are striving towards, and they are more than happy to hear it and wish you the best, then those are the people you want to tell.
But, if they are being snarky, changing the subject, or don’t seem to want the best for you, I would suggest maybe not saying anything and keeping it to yourself until you have proved to yourself that you can accomplish your goal!
What do I do?
I only tell my husband because I know he won’t judge me if I fail or don’t reach where I want to be. He won’t hold it against me, but he will remind me when I’m slipping.
You want to keep your goal because it excites you to achieve it. You don’t want to dread your resolution because you are only doing it to avoid “looking stupid” or “being a quitter.”
Another thing I do every year that helps is to have a plan. I don’t just say I’m going to do something; I have an actual plan that will help me daily or weekly.
That’s why I created a New Year’s Resolution Planner, which has all the resources you’ll need to take your resolutions to the next level and stick with them for the year! This works well, and I want the best for you, so I’m giving it FREE!
Most Common New Year’s Resolutions
If you talk to anyone around the end of December about what they are “giving up” or doing for their New Year’s Resolutions, it almost always contains one of these:
1) Improving Health and Fitness
2) Saving Money
3) Learning a New Skill
4) Quitting Bad Habits
5) Improving Relationships
6) Improving their Career
7) Traveling more than before
8) Some Self Care or Mental Health
These are so common because they can make you a better person. It doesn’t mean that you need to do all of them or even a couple of them, but they are common because, at the end of the day, we know what can make us a little happier.
I include these in my list because living an elegant lifestyle and having a little self-discipline to improve your life will help you achieve what you want. Even if it is very little, such as saving a few dollars a day, it doesn’t mean you will be rich afterward; it is exercising your self-discipline to get to where you want to be.
It shows you that you can do it. Something small can quickly become something much larger!

How to Set Goals for a New Year?
Before the New Year is the most exciting time of all.
There is so much hope and promise that you can almost see the progress that you’ll make!
You make yourself a coffee, get out your notebook, and start thinking of everything you want to improve.
You start with some ideas, but then they roll and get bigger with enormous expectations.
Sometimes, it can motivate you to change too much, which can then make you freeze to see how many things you want to change!
Or, it can demoralize you to see that you can never achieve so much!
Regardless, both lead you to feel inadequate and usually give up! All this even before you start!
How to Stick to Your Resolutions
Even with the best intentions, it’s easy to stay on track. To help, try these tips for staying committed to your New Year’s resolution ideas:
- Break Goals into Small Steps: Focus on progress, not perfection.
- Schedule Check-Ins: Set calendar reminders to reflect on your progress.
- Reward Yourself: Celebrate small wins with little treats or breaks.
- Track Your Progress: Use journals, apps, or habit trackers.
Remember, adjusting your goals is okay if they no longer align with your current needs. Staying flexible ensures your resolutions remain meaningful.
Top 5 Reasons Why New Year’s Resolutions Don’t Work
It can be demoralizing when you read that most people (almost all) fail at keeping their resolutions past the first month. But it doesn’t have to get you!
First, let’s examine why they fail—and maybe we can learn from that to prevent any failures this year!
- Lack of Specificity: Many resolutions are too vague, such as “get fit” or “save money.” Tracking progress and staying motivated is more effortless with specific, measurable goals.
- Unrealistic Expectations: Setting goals that are too ambitious or unattainable can lead to frustration and discouragement, making it easy to give up. This happens to me all the time! I must remember that I only have a limited time in my day!
- Lack of a Plan: Resolutions often fail because there’s no clear plan or strategy for achieving them. With actionable steps, it’s easier to make progress. That’s why you’ll want to get my free New Year’s Resolution planner. It breaks everything down for you and makes it easier to create a plan!
- Lack of Commitment: Resolutions require a strong commitment and consistent effort. With genuine dedication, it’s easy to maintain focus and motivation. It happens. The most important part is not to let it get you down too much or give up completely, but rebound and keep going.
- No Accountability: Without someone to hold you accountable or track your progress, it’s easy to let resolutions slide. Sharing goals with friends or using tools to monitor progress can help maintain accountability.
10 Tips to Make Your New Year’s Resolution a Reality in 2025
Making your New Year’s resolutions stick takes more than just good intentions. Here are ten practical tips to help you succeed:
1) Be Specific and Clear
Vague goals like “eat healthier” or “exercise more” often fall flat. Instead, get precise. For example, commit to “eating vegetables with every meal” or “working out for 30 minutes, 3 times a week.” Specificity gives you direction and focus.
2) Set Realistic Goals
While it’s great to aim high, setting too ambitious goals can feel overwhelming. Choose objectives that challenge you yet remain attainable. Remember, steady progress is better than rapid burnout.
3) Create a Step-by-Step Plan
Break down your resolutions into smaller, actionable tasks. For example, if you aim to save $1,200 this year, save $100 each month. A clear, phased plan makes your resolution feel manageable and achievable.
4) Track Your Progress
Use a journal, app, or calendar to monitor your progress. Seeing your progress over time, even small steps, will boost your motivation and remind you that you’re moving forward.
5) Stay Flexible
Life happens, and setbacks are inevitable. Be gentle with yourself and adjust your approach when necessary. Flexibility keeps you from giving up entirely when things are unplanned.
6) Build a Support System
Share your resolution with a friend, partner, or mentor who can encourage and hold you accountable. Whether it’s a workout buddy or a financial coach, the proper support can make a huge difference.
7) Celebrate Small Achievements
Be sure to celebrate before you’ve hit the finish line. Reward yourself for every milestone, no matter how small—it could be treating yourself to something nice or taking a break to enjoy your favorite activity.
8) Keep Your “Why” in Sight
Remind yourself regularly why your resolution matters. Whether for better health, personal growth, or building a better future, connecting with your deeper purpose inspires you.
9) Start Small and Build Momentum
Significant changes don’t happen overnight. Start with one or two small changes and build up from there. Taking small, consistent steps helps you gain confidence and momentum.
10) Revisit and Revise When Needed
Periodically assess your resolution. Are your goals still relevant? Is your plan effective? Refining your approach as needed ensures you stay on track and aligned with what truly matters to you.

Feeling connected will keep you inspired and foster meaningful relationships.
